St. Augustine Surprise

Here in Marion County, most of us look at St. Augustine Church and think that structure has been here forever.

However, below you will see photos of the SECOND St. Augustine Church (with my feeble attempt at colorization and sharpening). I have an image of the first church, but I am saving that for later.

The location of this second St. A is about the same as the current structure, but now the Church faces on Spalding Avenue...back when this photo was taken, there was no street there and the Church faces toward downtown Lebanon.

If you go to Tom Simm's building on the corner of Spalding and Mulberry, you will find a wide brick sidewalk still in existence on the Spalding Avenue street side. That is the original sidewalk that once lead up to the OLD St. A. Church.

Note the sign posted on the left hand side of the first picture ---No Picnics Allowed! What beautiful grounds those must have been....so beautiful they attracted so many "picnickers" that a sign had to be posted to outlaw the practice!

The front of the church has the words "Pax Intrantibus" - Latin for "Peace to all who enter!"

Yes!---- Peace! To all who enter!
