Message Board > Catalpa worms and a question about the Catalpa tree
Donna, Will wonders ever cease. I've found this website and you're already helping me learn more about things - I never knew. I've always tried to learn as many new things as possible in my life and have found that our elders are the best teachers. I know I've seen those worms for my entire life and I really never knew what they were called. So, Thanks so much for enlightening me. OK - now for my question. (maybe I could look out on the internet for this answer, but I know your Dad probably knows it - right off the top of his head). Are Catalpa trees what we once called "A cigar tree" ? (the leafes were large and silky looking and there were long slim seed pods that hung from the trees). Thanks - and keep up the good work on your "Daily Photo". Ronnie
Hey Ronnie! Yes, this is the cigar tree or Indian tree. I think there are several other names associated with it, also. I am like you - never knew all this before, and just can't believe it never came up before now. I have seen catalpa worms before, but just thought they were very attractive caterpillars that would turn into some especially beautiful butterflies. But that's not the case...the caterpillar stage is as pretty as they ever get.
