Johnson wants to put her educational experience to work
By Joshua Coffman
Georgietta Berry Johnson taught kindergarten in Marion County schools for 28
years and, if elected, she wants to use that experience serving on the Fifth
District school board seat.
Johnson, 52, says she believes parents should be actively involved the
education of their children, "whether it's conferencing with teachers,
volunteering in the school, chaperoning a dance or field trip or cheering on
the sidelines."
"I feel, as a parent and former teacher in Marion County, that I know the
needs of our schools," she said.
Johnson has served on the site-based decision-making council at Lebanon
Middle School and on various other school committees.
"I feel that my classroom experience, professional development, committee
work and an understanding of the day-to-day operation of public schools
qualify me for (a school board) position," she said.
If elected, Johnson said she will work to improve test scores and meet
federal guidelines established by the No Child Left Behind program.
Johnson also wants county schools to get more technological equipment.
"I would like to see a 'smart board' in each and every classroom," she said.
And she said renovations for Calvary Elementary and Marion County High
School will take much planning for which she's willing to put forth effort.
Johnson graduated from MCHS in 1972. She has a BS in Child Development and
an MS in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Kentucky University.
In addition to retiring after teaching at Glasscock and West Marion
elementary, she is now in her third year of teaching at Kentucky Christian
School in Campbellsville.
Johnson is a member of Lebanon Baptist Church.
She is married to Hayden Johnson and has three children, Daniel, Devin and
DeLanna.
NOTE: Voters who will be able to cast a ballot in this race include those in all of the Calvary Precinct, Hamilton Hts, Depot and the part of the Courthouse west of Highway 49 aka Proctor Knott Ave.
